C-Test at the University of Münster: format, rules, points
The University of Münster language centre uses a C-Test to place students in language courses. For English, the result can also matter beyond that: in English Studies, for the FFA in law and for exchange places. Here are the facts from the university’s pages, each with its source.

Rules for filling in the gaps
- The test has four short texts. The first and the last sentence have no gaps.
- Every second word is missing half of its letters; there are 100 gaps in total, so the maximum is 100 points.
- You have 25 minutes from the start of the test; the whole session takes about 30 minutes. You take it alone and without aids.
- You type only the missing half. With an odd number of letters, the shorter half is given ("the" appears as "t").
- An apostrophe counts as a letter ("can’t" appears as "ca").
- Typing more than one solution in a gap counts as wrong. If several answers are genuinely correct, each correct single answer is accepted.
- Leaving gaps empty is normal: native-speaker level is not the goal.

English Studies: 70 points as the benchmark
- New English Studies students should take a – non-compulsory – C-Test at the start of their degree. (Source: Fachschaft Anglistik Münster: C-Test)
- At least 70 points document adequate English for the foundation modules. (Source: Fachschaft Anglistik Münster: C-Test)
- Below 70 points a preparation course at the language centre is recommended; with more than 69 points you cannot take that course. (Source: Fachschaft Anglistik Münster: C-Test)
FFA (subject-specific foreign language training, law)
- Requirements: enrolment in a law degree in Münster and sufficient language skills, for example a passed C-Test. (Source: Universität Münster, Rechtswissenschaft: FFA – Anmeldung und Ablauf)
- English track: below 70 points no enrolment; from 70 points enrolment with the required supplementary course; from 85 points the supplementary course is waived. (Source: Universität Münster, Rechtswissenschaft: FFA – Anmeldung und Ablauf)
- The language centre offers the C-Test during the semester break and usually in the first week of the semester. (Source: Universität Münster, Rechtswissenschaft: FFA – Anmeldung und Ablauf)
- Certificates (no older than 2 years) can be credited instead of the C-Test, for example TOEFL iBT 100, IELTS Academic 6.5 (Reading and Writing) or Cambridge CAE/CPE grade C; about 70 points are then credited. (Source: Sprachenzentrum Universität Münster: C-Test)
Studying abroad via the law faculty
According to a notice from 28 September 2020, the language centre’s C-Test was also sufficient for the faculty’s internal allocation of study-abroad places, unless the application information said otherwise. Because the test is only offered at the beginning and end of a semester, applicants had to take it in time before the mid-semester allocation. What this means for your preparation
- One attempt per semester: practise beforehand, not in the real test.
- The C-Test Prep simulation has the same format: 4 texts, 100 gaps, 25 minutes.
- Difference 1: Münster also gaps words with an apostrophe ("can’t" → "ca"). Our texts leave out contractions, numbers and proper nouns.
- Difference 2: we found no general points-to-level table on the Münster C-Test page. Our level is an estimate using the Tübingen table.
- The official demo shows how the interface works; it is not a bank of many practice texts. (Source: Demo-Version des Münsteraner C-Tests)
